Move a Piano, Organize an Office!

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

It’s always interesting to look back and see the block that kept someone stuck. I had been working with a client for well over a year to create a functional home office. For a variety of reasons we just treaded water, just keeping her head afloat above a sea of papers that relentlessly kept pouring in.

Then one day I arrived to find the addition of several pieces of furniture to her home office. How had that happened?

As it turned out, the previous session as I was helping my client tackle tasks that had been haunting her for some time, we came across a reminder to tune the piano. My client’s comment about that was, “I really want to move it upstairs, but I don’t know who I can get to do that.” My response was, “Call the piano tuner and ask him.” She made the call and left a message.

To my surprise and delight, the furniture additions to the office were there because they had had to be moved somewhere in preparation for moving the piano. And, that furniture was just what we needed to set up the office to be fully functional.

Sometimes you just don’t know how much one small action can accomplish! In this case not only did one phone call lead to moving a piano, but it also facilitated the creation of an improved work space!
